Chemical Wash vs General Service: What You Need to Know
Both a general service and a chemical wash aim to improve your aircond's performance, but they differ significantly in scope, duration and results. Choosing the wrong one means either paying more than necessary or not addressing the underlying problem.
What Is a General Service?
A general service is the standard maintenance procedure. The technician removes and washes the filters, wipes down the blower fan, flushes the condensate drain and checks refrigerant pressure. It takes around 30 to 45 minutes per unit and is recommended every three to four months for residential use.
What Is a Chemical Wash?
A chemical wash goes significantly deeper. The indoor unit is partially dismantled so the evaporator coil can be soaked in a specialised alkaline or acidic cleaning solution. This dissolves hardened grime, grease, mould and mineral deposits that a standard service cannot remove. After soaking, the coil is rinsed with pressurised water and treated with an antibacterial agent.
When to Choose a Chemical Wash
- Your unit produces a musty or unpleasant odour even after a general service.
- Cooling output has dropped noticeably despite a recent standard clean.
- Water is leaking from the indoor unit due to a partially blocked coil.
- The unit has not been serviced in over a year.
- Visible mould or dark residue is present on the coil fins.
When a General Service Is Enough
- The unit is serviced regularly every three to four months.
- Cooling performance is satisfactory.
- No odour or water leakage issues.
- The unit is less than two years old and has been maintained from new.
Cost and Time Comparison
A general service typically costs RM 80 to RM 100 per unit and takes under an hour. A chemical wash ranges from RM 140 to RM 200 per unit and can take one to two hours. While the chemical wash costs more per visit, it is usually needed only once or twice a year if general services are kept on schedule.
